About District 9

The United States Power Squadrons® is a national organization, comprised of 33 districts. Each district is in turn a union of different local squadrons in a general area of coverage. District 9 has 15 local squadrons located in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The squadrons range in size from about 13 to over 200 members. District 9 has nearly 1,000 members. You can find USPS members boating throughout the United States and in some foreign countries, in waters of every type and in boats of every size and style. Wherever and however you boat, our members are ready to help you. “For Boaters, By Boaters®

District 9 Leadership

Our District is managed by a group of elected volunteers who serve on our District Bridge. The district serves as the link between the national organization and the local squadron. It serves as a resource to the squadron leadership by providing information to the squadrons. It also provides feedback to the national organization about items of concern to the squadrons. Each squadron officer has a district counterpart who can provide information and answer questions.

District Conferences

The district and one of the squadrons host a District Conference twice each year. These weekend-long meetings are for all members of the district. They include business meetings and seminars as well as many informal gatherings. Seminar subjects include educational course offerings, boating safety, co-op charting, membership and membership involvement, and officer meetings. A representative of the USPS Chief Commander attends and participates in many of the meetings.

District 9 and its Member Squadrons

District 9 facilitates and coordinates the efforts of its squadrons in a variety of ways, including:

  • Collecting and disseminating information on Boating Classes for the general public
  • Collecting and disseminating information on classes for members of
the organization and to make it easier for members to take classes
    offered by other squadrons
  • Collecting and disseminating cruising schedules of the squadrons and to encourage joint activities
  • Coordinating Public Relations efforts to make the public aware of the availability of the Boating Classes
  • Encouraging and coordinating the Cooperative Charting program
through which members submit chart corrections to governmental agencies
  • Coordinating squadron efforts to support safe boating
